Hyaluronidase: correcting and dissolving hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid. It is applied where a previous filler was placed to correct excess product, irregularities, lumps or migration of the gel. It does not dissolve other types of filler, such as biostimulators and permanent products. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

How it works

The hyaluronic acid in fillers is a substance the body absorbs gradually over months. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that speeds up this absorption: applied to the area, it breaks down the gel molecules, which are eliminated by the body within hours to a few days.

For this reason, hyaluronic acid is considered a reversible filler. The enzyme allows unwanted results to be corrected, and its indication is made by the dermatologist at the evaluation.

Indications

Hyaluronidase is also used to treat lumps related to previous hyaluronic acid fillers.

Treated areas

FaceLips · Under-eyes · Nose · Cheeks · Folds · Chin and jawline

What a session is like

The doctor assesses the area, asks about previous procedures (product, date and area) and, when necessary, recommends a dermatologic ultrasound to locate the material. After the skin is cleaned, the enzyme is applied with a fine needle at the points where the gel is.

Recovery

There may be swelling, redness and tenderness for one to two days. You can return to your activities on the same day.

Sessions and results

The effect starts within a few hours, and the result is assessed after a few days. The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern.

Contraindications

Hyaluronidase is not recommended for people with a known allergy to the enzyme or over active infections in the area, except when treating the infection depends on removing the gel. Allergy to bee or wasp stings and pregnancy require evaluation.

At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.

All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does hyaluronidase dissolve any filler?

No. It acts only on hyaluronic acid. Biostimulators, such as poly-L-lactic acid and calcium hydroxylapatite, and permanent products, such as PMMA and silicone, are not dissolved by the enzyme.

How do I know which product was used before?

Knowing the product name, the date and the area of the application helps a lot. When this information is not available, dermatologic ultrasound shows where the material is and the likely type of product, which guides the application of the enzyme.

How quickly does hyaluronidase work?

The enzyme starts to act within a few hours, and the result is usually assessed after a few days. In some cases, more than one application is needed.

Can hyaluronidase cause an allergy?

Allergic reactions are rare but possible. People who are allergic to bee or wasp stings should tell the doctor.

Can I have a new filler after it is dissolved?

Yes. After complete absorption and once the tissues have settled, a new filler can be planned, according to the medical evaluation.
