Facial MMP: microinfusion of medication into the skin

MMP (microinfusion of medication into the skin) is a technique that delivers active ingredients directly to the dermis through a microneedle device, which deposits the product evenly across the whole treated area. On the face, it is used for rejuvenation and skin quality, with active ingredients chosen by the doctor according to the goal, such as improving glow, texture and dark spots. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

How it works

In MMP, a microneedle device, similar to the one used in micropigmentation, deposits the active ingredient into the dermis as the needles penetrate the skin. This way, the product reaches the depth where it should act, evenly and with less waste than applications on the skin surface.

The treatment combines two effects: the stimulus of the microneedles, which activates collagen production, and the action of the infused ingredients, chosen for each goal. On the face, it is used for rejuvenation and to improve glow, texture and dark spots.

What a session is like

After the skin is cleaned, a numbing cream is applied. The doctor prepares the active ingredients defined at the evaluation and applies the device over the whole treated area. A session lasts about 1 hour.

Recovery

The skin is red and tender, and small dots or thin crusts may appear, which come off within a few days.

Sessions and results

The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern. The improvement is progressive and varies from person to person.

Contraindications

MMP is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, over inflamed acne, wounds, infections or active herpes, for people prone to keloids, or for those allergic to the ingredients used. Recent use of isotretinoin and bleeding disorders require evaluation.

At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.

All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MMP and microneedling?

In microneedling, the needles create microchannels, and the active ingredients can be applied afterwards, on the skin. In MMP, the device itself deposits the medication into the dermis as the needles penetrate, delivering the active ingredient directly and evenly to the layer of skin where it acts.

Which active ingredients are used in MMP?

The ingredients are chosen by the doctor according to the goal, such as vitamins, antioxidants, non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid or lightening agents. The formula is defined at the evaluation, according to each patient's skin.

Is MMP also used for hair?

Yes. Hair MMP delivers medication to the scalp and is used to treat hair loss and thinning. The technique has its own page.

How long is the recovery?

The skin is red and may form small thin crusts, which come off within a few days. Makeup can be worn once the doctor allows it, usually after 24 to 48 hours.
