Localized fat: causes and non-surgical treatments
Localized fat is the buildup of fat in specific areas, such as the abdomen, flanks, saddlebags, arms and under the chin, which tends to resist a balanced diet and physical activity. Its distribution depends mainly on genetics and hormones. Non-surgical treatments reduce small pockets of fat and improve contour, but they do not replace weight loss or liposuction in larger cases. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, the indication is made by a dermatologist at the appointment.
Why it happens
The body stores fat in places largely defined by genetics and hormones. In women, it tends to accumulate on the hips, thighs and lower abdomen; in men, on the abdomen and flanks. Even at a healthy weight, these areas can keep pockets of fat that respond little to diet and exercise.
Age, hormonal changes, such as menopause, and a sedentary lifestyle also play a role.
How the evaluation is done
The dermatologist assesses the amount of fat in each area, skin firmness, weight and lifestyle, and determines whether the concern is suitable for non-surgical treatments or whether another approach is more appropriate.
Recommended treatments
- Ultraformer® MPTReduces small pockets of fat and firms the skin on the abdomen, flanks and under the chin.
- Evolla® MPNeedle-free radiofrequency on the abdomen and flanks, for small pockets of fat and skin firmness, with no downtime.
- Evolla® XLMicroneedling radiofrequency on the abdomen and flanks, with an effect on firmness.
Combined treatments
Localized fat often comes with skin laxity. For this reason, fat-reduction treatments are frequently combined with technologies and biostimulators that firm the skin, as well as a balanced diet and physical activity.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do localized fat treatments help with weight loss?
No. The treatments act on small pockets in specific areas and improve contour, but they do not lead to weight loss. They work best for people close to their usual weight.
Does the fat come back after treatment?
Treated fat cells do not come back, but the remaining ones can grow with weight gain. Keeping healthy habits preserves the result.
What is the difference from liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgery that removes larger amounts of fat. Non-surgical treatments have a more subtle and gradual effect, with no downtime, and are indicated for small pockets.
How soon do results show?
The reduction is gradual, over weeks to months, depending on the treatment and each person's response.
