Evolla® XL: microneedling radiofrequency
Evolla® XL is a microneedling radiofrequency treatment: fine microneedles penetrate the skin and release radiofrequency energy within the dermis, at the depth chosen by the doctor. The heat and micro-injuries stimulate collagen production, improving skin laxity, texture, acne scars and stretch marks, on the face and body. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

How it works
The Evolla® XL handpiece has a set of microneedles that penetrate the skin quickly and in a controlled way. When they reach the programmed depth, the needles release radiofrequency energy, which heats the dermis from within and forms small areas of coagulation (controlled heating of the tissue). Because the energy is released mainly at the tip of the needles, the surface of the skin is less affected than in treatments that heat from the outside in.
The body responds to this stimulus by contracting existing collagen fibers and, over the following weeks, producing new collagen and elastin. The result is firmer, thicker skin with a more even texture.
The needle depth and energy intensity are adjusted for each area: more superficial on the face, for texture and pores, and deeper on the body, where the needles can reach up to 7 mm deep and act on the fat under the skin and the fibrous bands of cellulite.

What a session is like
The skin is cleaned and a numbing cream is applied, which takes about 30 to 60 minutes to work. The doctor then applies the handpiece in sequence over the area, with quick pulses. A session lasts about 1 hour.
Recovery
Right after the session, the skin is red and slightly swollen, as after sun exposure. These signs usually decrease within one to three days. Small dots or thin crusts may appear where the needles entered and flake off during the first week.
Sessions and results
The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern.
The result appears gradually, from the second or third month, and continues to develop for a few months after the last session. The response varies according to age, skin quality and the type of concern.
Contraindications
Evolla® XL is not recommended during pregnancy, for people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices, over metal implants in the area, over wounds, infections or active herpes, or for people prone to keloids. Recent use of isotretinoin, active autoimmune diseases, bleeding disorders and metal allergy require case-by-case evaluation.
At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does microneedling radiofrequency hurt?
With the numbing cream applied before the session, most people feel only heat and slight pricks. Sensitivity varies with the area and the depth of the needles.
How long does the skin stay red after Evolla® XL?
Redness and swelling usually last one to three days. Small dots or thin crusts may appear and flake off during the first week. Makeup can usually be worn from the next day, as advised by the doctor.
What is the difference between Evolla® XL and regular microneedling?
Regular microneedling creates microchannels in the skin with the needles alone. In Evolla® XL, the needles also release radiofrequency at the chosen depth, adding the effect of heat to the stimulus of the micro-injuries, which tends to increase collagen production.
Does Evolla® XL treat old acne scars?
Yes. Microneedling radiofrequency is used for old acne scars, especially depressed scars with soft edges. Deep, very marked scars usually require a combination with other treatments, such as subcision and laser.
Can I have Evolla® XL in the summer?
Yes, as long as you avoid direct sun exposure in the following weeks and use sunscreen every day, since the skin is more sensitive after the session.
