Neck and décolletage: lines, laxity, bands and dark spots
The neck and décolletage show signs of aging early, because the skin is thin, has few glands and usually receives less care and more sun. The most common concerns are horizontal lines, laxity, vertical bands formed by the platysma muscle and sun spots. Treatment combines botulinum toxin, firming technologies, biostimulators, injectable hydration and intense pulsed light. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, the plan is defined by a dermatologist at the appointment.

Why it happens
The skin of the neck and décolletage is thinner than facial skin and has fewer sebaceous glands, which makes it drier and more sensitive. With aging, it loses collagen and firmness, and the platysma muscle just below it forms vertical bands. Sun exposure, often without sunscreen on these areas, causes dark spots, redness and rough texture, especially on the décolletage.
How the evaluation is done
The dermatologist assesses laxity, horizontal lines, muscle bands, dark spots and skin quality, and defines which treatments apply to each component.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What are neck bands?
They are vertical cords formed by the platysma muscle, which become more visible with age, especially when talking or tensing the neck. Botulinum toxin relaxes this muscle and softens the bands.
Can horizontal neck lines be treated?
Yes. Skinboosters, Profhilo (hyaluronic acid) and, in some cases, very superficial fillers soften the lines, combined with sun protection and attention to posture.
Can I use the same creams on my neck as on my face?
Usually yes, but neck skin is more sensitive, and some active ingredients, such as acids and retinoids, should be introduced with caution.
Does using a phone cause neck wrinkles?
Keeping the neck bent for long periods can accentuate horizontal lines. Paying attention to posture helps prevent them.
