Microneedling: robotic (Evolla®) and dermaroller
Microneedling is a treatment that uses very fine needles to create microchannels in the skin in a controlled way. The body responds by producing collagen, which improves texture, acne scars, stretch marks and skin glow. At the clinic, it is done with the Evolla® robotic device, with depth control and the option of delivering active ingredients, or manually with a dermaroller. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

How it works
The microneedles pass through the surface of the skin and create thousands of microchannels, which close within a few hours. These controlled micro-injuries activate the skin's natural healing process, with the release of growth factors and the production of new collagen and elastin. Over time, the skin becomes firmer, with more even texture and less visible scars and stretch marks.
The microchannels also increase the penetration of active ingredients applied right after the procedure, a technique called drug delivery. At the clinic, microneedling can be done in two ways:
- Robotic microneedling (Evolla®): the device controls the depth and speed of the needles, with the option of drug delivery or a combined peel.
- Dermaroller: a roller with microneedles, applied manually, on the face and body.
Indications
- Acne scarsDepressed scars and uneven texture.
- Stretch marksWhite and red stretch marks.
- Dull skin, texture and poresEnlarged pores, dull skin and fine lines.
- Dark spots and melasmaWith delivery of lightening agents, as support in treatment.

What a session is like
After the skin is cleaned, a numbing cream is applied. The doctor passes the device or the dermaroller over the area, at the depth defined at the evaluation, and, when indicated, applies the active ingredients at the end. A session lasts about 1 hour.
Recovery
The skin is red and tender, as after sun exposure, for one to three days, and may peel slightly over the following days.
Sessions and results
The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern. The improvement in texture and glow appears in the first weeks, and the effect on scars and stretch marks develops over the months. The response varies from person to person.
Contraindications
Microneedling is not recommended during pregnancy, over inflamed acne, wounds, infections or active herpes, or for people prone to keloids. Recent use of isotretinoin, bleeding disorders and active autoimmune diseases require evaluation.
At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between robotic microneedling and the dermaroller?
In robotic microneedling (Evolla®), the device controls the depth and speed of the needles, making the treatment more even and precise. The dermaroller is a roller with microneedles, applied manually, used for specific areas and indications.
What is drug delivery?
It is the application of active ingredients to the skin right after microneedling, taking advantage of the microchannels so they penetrate better. The ingredients are chosen by the doctor according to the goal, such as lightening dark spots or improving hydration.
How long does the skin stay red?
Redness usually lasts one to three days, depending on the depth of the needles. There may be mild peeling over the following days.
What is the difference between microneedling and Evolla® XL?
Microneedling creates microchannels with the needles alone. In Evolla® XL, the needles also release radiofrequency inside the skin, adding the effect of heat to the stimulus of the micro-injuries.
