Scalp microneedling: stimulating the hair and absorption of active ingredients
Scalp microneedling is done with the Evolla® robotic device, which creates controlled microchannels in the skin of the scalp. The stimulus increases local circulation, activates growth factors linked to the hair cycle and improves the absorption of active ingredients applied afterwards. It is used as a complement in the treatment of hair loss and baldness. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.
- Duration
- About 1 hour
- Anesthesia
- Numbing cream
- Recovery
- Redness for 1 to 2 days
- Device
- Evolla® (robotic microneedling)
How it works
The microneedles create thousands of microchannels in the scalp, which close within a few hours. The stimulus increases local circulation and releases growth factors involved in the hair cycle. The microchannels also improve the penetration of active ingredients applied right after the procedure.
With the Evolla® robotic device, the depth and speed of the needles are controlled, which makes the stimulus even across the whole treated area.
Indications
- Hair thinning and baldnessMale and female androgenetic alopecia.
- Hair lossPersistent hair loss, as a complement to treatment.
Treated areas
ScalpFrontal area · Crown (vertex) · Receding hairline · Diffuse thinning areas
What a session is like
The scalp is cleaned and a numbing cream is applied. The doctor passes the device over the areas of hair loss or thinning and, when indicated, applies the active ingredients at the end. A session lasts about 1 hour.
Recovery
The scalp may be red and tender for one to two days.
Sessions and results
The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern. The improvement is gradual, since the hair cycle takes months.
Contraindications
Scalp microneedling is not recommended during pregnancy, over wounds, infections or active inflammation of the scalp, or for people prone to keloids. Bleeding disorders and some scalp diseases require evaluation.
At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does scalp microneedling make hair grow?
Microneedling stimulates the scalp and enhances the action of the active ingredients applied, as part of the treatment of hair loss and baldness. It does not replace medical treatment, and the response depends on the cause of the hair loss and how early treatment starts.
What is the advantage of robotic microneedling?
The device controls the depth and speed of the needles, which makes the stimulus more even across the whole treated area.
Can I wash my hair on the same day?
It is usually recommended to wait until the next day, as advised by the doctor, especially when active ingredients are applied after the procedure.
