Hyaluronic acid lip filler: contour, volume and hydration
Lip filler is the application of hyaluronic acid to the lips to define the contour, restore volume lost over time, correct asymmetries and improve hydration. The result is immediate, and the plan respects the proportions of the face, ranging from subtle hydration to a greater gain in volume. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

How it works
Over time, the lips lose volume and hydration, the contour becomes less defined and fine lines appear around the mouth. Hyaluronic acid applied to the lips restores this volume, defines the contour and attracts water to the tissues, which improves hydration.
Soft, flexible gels are used for the lips, which follow the movements of the mouth. The plan takes into account the proportion between the upper and lower lip, the shape of the Cupid's bow and the harmony with the rest of the face.

What a session is like
The doctor assesses the lips at rest and when smiling and defines the treatment goal with the patient. After cleaning and applying a numbing cream, the gel is applied with a fine needle or cannula, in small amounts, shaping the lips throughout the application.
Recovery
The lips are swollen and tender in the first few days, and small bruises may appear. Swelling is more noticeable in the first two to three days and decreases over the first week.
Sessions and results
The result is visible right after the application and becomes defined once the swelling goes down. The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern. The effect lasts, on average, six to 12 months and varies from person to person.
Contraindications
Lip filler is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with cold sores or other active infections on the lips, or for people allergic to the product's components. Previous permanent fillers in the lips require evaluation.
At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Will lip filler look artificial?
No, when the volume and shape are planned according to the proportions of the face. It is possible to do anything from subtle hydration, with no change in volume, to a greater gain, according to the patient's wishes and the medical evaluation.
How long does lip filler last?
On average, six to 12 months. The lips move a lot, which makes the product absorb faster than in other areas of the face.
Does lip filler hurt?
The lips are sensitive, but the numbing cream and the anesthetic in the gel itself make the application tolerable. In some cases, a nerve block similar to the one used at the dentist may be performed.
How long does the swelling last?
Swelling is more noticeable in the first two to three days and decreases over the first week. The final result is assessed after this period.
Can people with cold sores have lip filler?
Yes, but you need to tell the doctor, because the application can trigger an outbreak. In these cases, preventive medication is usually prescribed before the procedure. With an active cold sore, the filler should be postponed.
