Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse and Diamond Intense): support and collagen

Calcium hydroxylapatite is an injectable biostimulator, found in products such as Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) and Diamond Intense (calcium hydroxylapatite), made of microspheres similar to the mineral in bones, suspended in a gel. Once applied, it provides immediate support and, over the following months, stimulates collagen production, improving the firmness and contour of the face, neck and hands. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is applied by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

How it works

Calcium hydroxylapatite is made of microspheres of a mineral similar to the one that makes up bones, suspended in a gel. Right after the application, the gel provides support and subtle volume to the area. Over the following weeks, the gel is absorbed and the microspheres stimulate fibroblasts to produce collagen around them. Over time, the microspheres are also absorbed, and the collagen formed remains.

The product can be used in two ways: concentrated, for support and contour definition, such as on the jawline and cheeks; or diluted, over large areas, to improve skin firmness and quality, such as on the neck, décolletage and back of the hands.

What a session is like

The doctor assesses the skin and defines how the product will be applied, concentrated or diluted. After cleaning and anesthesia, the product is applied with a cannula or needle, at points or in a fan pattern, distributed across the treated area.

Recovery

There may be swelling, tenderness and small bruises in the first few days. You can return to your activities on the same day or the next.

Sessions and results

The support is noticed right after the application, and the improvement in skin firmness and quality develops over two to three months. The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern. The effect lasts, on average, 12 to 18 months.

Contraindications

Calcium hydroxylapatite is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, on the lips or under the eyes, over infections or active inflammation in the area, for people allergic to the product's components, or for those prone to keloids. Active autoimmune diseases and previous permanent fillers require evaluation.

At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.

All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between calcium hydroxylapatite and hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid restores volume and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Calcium hydroxylapatite provides support and stimulates collagen production, improving skin quality, but it is not dissolved by hyaluronidase.

What is diluted hydroxylapatite?

It is the application of the product mixed with saline or anesthetic, in a larger volume and lower concentration, spread over a wide area. This technique focuses on collagen stimulation and skin quality, without adding volume, and is used on the face, neck, décolletage and hands.

Can hydroxylapatite be applied to the lips and under the eyes?

No. In these areas, with thin skin and a lot of movement, suitable hyaluronic acid gels are used.

How long does the result last?

On average, 12 to 18 months, depending on the technique, the area and each person's metabolism.
