Droopy eyelids and a tired look: non-surgical treatments
A tired look is mainly caused by laxity and excess skin of the eyelids, drooping eyebrows and loss of quality of the skin around the eyes. In mild to moderate cases, non-surgical treatments such as Plasma IQ®, the erbium laser and Ultraformer® improve the firmness and appearance of the area. When there is a large excess of skin or fat bags, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is more appropriate. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, the indication is made by a dermatologist at the appointment.

Why it happens
The skin of the eyelids is very thin and loses elasticity early. With aging, it becomes excess and forms folds over the upper eyelid, the eyebrows tend to drop and lines appear around the eyes. On the lower eyelid, laxity and volume loss accentuate dark circles and bags.
Genetics, sun exposure and rubbing the eyes speed up these changes.
How the evaluation is done
The dermatologist assesses the amount of excess skin, the position of the eyebrows, the presence of fat bags and the quality of the skin, and determines whether the concern can be treated without surgery or whether blepharoplasty is more appropriate.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does non-surgical treatment replace blepharoplasty?
In cases of laxity and mild to moderate excess skin, it can bring good results. When there is a large excess of skin, fat bags or skin that interferes with vision, blepharoplasty is the indication.
Do under-eye bags improve with these treatments?
Bags formed by fat respond little to non-surgical treatments. Puffiness from fluid retention and skin laxity can improve. The evaluation tells each case apart.
Does botulinum toxin lift the eyebrows?
In some cases, application at specific points produces a subtle lift of the tail of the eyebrow, which opens up the eyes.
What is recovery like after eyelid treatment?
It depends on the technique: with Plasma IQ®, there is swelling for a few days and thin crusts that fall off in about a week; with Ultraformer®, there is no downtime.
