Plasma IQ®: eyelid treatment with plasma, without incisions

Plasma IQ® is a device that uses plasma, a low-intensity electrical discharge between the handpiece and the skin, to create micro-points of retraction on the surface of the skin, without incisions or stitches. It is indicated mainly for laxity and mild excess skin of the eyelids, improving firmness and a tired look. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

How it works

The Plasma IQ® handpiece does not touch the skin. It generates a small plasma discharge, similar to a low-intensity spark, which vaporizes a microscopic point of the most superficial layer of the skin. Around each point, the heat causes collagen fibers to retract and stimulates the production of new collagen.

The points are applied with spaces of intact skin between them, which speeds up recovery. The result is retraction of the treated skin, with improvement of laxity and mild excess skin, especially on the eyelids, where the skin is thin.

Indications

In the perioral area, the treatment is used for fine wrinkles above the lip, known as smoker's lines. Plasma IQ® is also used to remove benign skin lesions, such as xanthelasma (yellowish fatty plaques on the eyelids) and skin tags (small lesions common on the neck and underarms), without the need for stitches.

What a session is like

After the skin is cleaned, a numbing cream is applied, which takes about 30 to 40 minutes to work. The doctor applies the micro-points in an organized pattern over the area, with the eye protected. A session lasts about 1 hour.

Recovery

Right after the session, the micro-points are visible as small dark marks, which form thin crusts. The eyelids may be swollen for two to three days, especially on waking. The crusts fall off on their own in five to seven days, and the skin may be pink for a few weeks.

Sessions and results

The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern.

Skin retraction starts to be noticed after the crusts fall off and continues to develop over the following weeks, with the production of new collagen. The response varies from person to person.

Contraindications

Plasma IQ® is not recommended during pregnancy, over infections, herpes or active skin inflammation, for people prone to keloids, or in cases of a large excess of skin or fat bags on the eyelids, where surgery is more appropriate. Darker skin, active autoimmune diseases and recent use of isotretinoin require case-by-case evaluation.

At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.

All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Plasma IQ® replace blepharoplasty?

Not in every case. Plasma IQ® is indicated for laxity and mild to moderate excess skin of the eyelids. When there is a large excess of skin or fat bags, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) tends to be more appropriate, and the medical evaluation helps define the indication.

Does Plasma IQ® hurt?

With the numbing cream applied before the session, most people feel only heat and slight pricks. Sensitivity varies from person to person.

How long is the recovery?

The eyelids are swollen for two to three days, and the micro-points form thin crusts that fall off on their own in five to seven days. During this period, makeup should be avoided on the area. Afterwards, the skin may be pink for a few weeks.

Can people with darker skin have Plasma IQ®?

With caution. In darker skin, the indication requires careful evaluation, skin preparation and strict sun protection.
