Body skin laxity: abdomen, arms, thighs and buttocks
Body skin laxity is the loss of firmness of the skin of the body, most common on the abdomen, inner arms, thighs, buttocks and above the knees. It results from the reduction of collagen with age, weight loss, pregnancy and sun exposure. In mild to moderate cases, technologies and biostimulators improve firmness; in cases with a large excess of skin, surgery is more appropriate. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, the plan is defined by a dermatologist at the appointment.

Why it happens
Skin firmness depends on collagen and elastin. With age, the production of these fibers decreases, and the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. Weight loss, especially when rapid, pregnancy, sun exposure and smoking speed up this process, and the skin cannot retract completely.
How the evaluation is done
The dermatologist assesses the amount of excess skin, firmness and the presence of localized fat, cellulite and stretch marks, and determines whether the laxity is suitable for non-surgical treatments.
Recommended treatments
- Body biostimulatorStimulates collagen and improves the firmness of the body skin.
- Ultraformer® MPTFirmness of the arms, abdomen and flanks.
- Evolla® MPRadiofrequency for abdominal firmness, with no downtime.
- Evolla® XLMicroneedling radiofrequency for laxity and stretch marks.
Combined treatments
Biostimulators and technologies can be combined, since they act at different depths. When there is also localized fat or cellulite, treatments for these concerns are integrated into the plan.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can loose skin after weight loss be treated?
Yes, in mild to moderate cases. When the weight loss was very large and there is excess skin, plastic surgery is the most appropriate option.
Does exercise fix laxity?
Exercise strengthens the muscles and improves contour, but it does not restore the skin's collagen. Treatments and physical activity complement each other.
When do the results show?
The improvement is gradual, because it depends on the production of new collagen, and is usually noticed from the second or third month.
Which area responds best?
The response varies from person to person and with the area. The abdomen, arms and buttocks usually respond well when laxity is mild to moderate.
