Volume loss and folds: nasolabial folds, temples and cheeks
Facial volume loss happens because, with aging, the facial bones are reabsorbed and the fat compartments shrink and shift. The result is deeper folds, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines, hollow temples and cheeks and a tired look. Treatment restores support with fillers and biostimulators. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, the plan is defined by a dermatologist at the appointment.

Why it happens
A young face has evenly distributed volume, with projected cheeks and smooth transitions. Over time, the facial bones lose mass, especially around the eyes, the upper jaw and the jawline, and the fat compartments shrink and descend. Without this base, the skin loses support, and folds and shadows appear.
The most affected areas are the temples, cheeks, the area under the eyes, the nasolabial fold, the marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the chin) and the chin.
How the evaluation is done
The dermatologist analyzes the proportions of the face, the points of volume and support loss and the quality of the skin, at rest and in motion. The plan is made by region and by the amount of product needed in each one.
Recommended treatments
- Hyaluronic acid fillersVolume restoration in the temples, cheeks and folds.

Combined treatments
Volume restoration with fillers can be combined with biostimulators, which improve the skin, and with botulinum toxin, which softens expression lines. When there is laxity, technologies such as Ultraformer® complement the treatment.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does filling the nasolabial fold solve it?
Not always. The fold is often a consequence of the loss of support in the midface. Restoring volume in the cheeks can soften the fold indirectly, without filling only the line.
Will fillers make my face look puffy?
No, when the amount and points are planned according to the anatomy. The goal is to restore what was lost, without excess. The swelling of the first few days is part of recovery and goes away.
How long does volume restoration last?
Hyaluronic acid lasts, on average, 12 to 18 months, and biostimulators can maintain the effect for up to about two years. Duration varies with the product and metabolism.
Does losing weight cause facial volume loss?
Yes. Weight loss also reduces facial fat, which can deepen folds and hollow the temples and cheeks.
