Hair MMP: microinfusion of medication into the scalp
Hair MMP (microinfusion of medication into the skin) is a technique that delivers medication directly to the scalp, in areas of hair loss or thinning, through a microneedle device. It is used to treat pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and other causes of hair loss, as a complement to medical treatment, and can be combined with hair mesotherapy in the same session. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, it is performed by dermatologists after a medical evaluation.

- Duration
- About 1 hour
- Anesthesia
- Numbing cream, when indicated
- Recovery
- Redness and small crusts for a few days
- Medications
- Defined at the evaluation
How it works
Lotions and tonics applied to the scalp have limited penetration, and part of the product stays on the hair. In MMP, a microneedle device deposits the medication into the scalp skin, at the depth where the follicles (hair roots) are, evenly across the whole treated area.
The treatment combines two effects: the action of the medications, chosen according to the cause of the hair loss, and the stimulus of the microneedles, which increases local circulation. The goal is to reduce hair loss and improve hair thickness and density.
Indications
Hair MMP is indicated after the cause of hair loss has been diagnosed, at the appointment and, when necessary, with digital trichoscopy.
- Hair thinning and baldnessMale and female androgenetic alopecia.
- Hair lossPersistent hair loss, as part of the treatment defined at the appointment.
Treated areas
ScalpFrontal area · Crown (vertex) · Receding hairline · Diffuse thinning areas
What a session is like
The hair is parted into sections and the scalp is cleaned. When indicated, a numbing cream is applied. The doctor passes the device with the medications over the thinning areas. A session lasts about 1 hour.
Recovery
The scalp may be red and tender, with small crusts that come off within a few days.
Sessions and results
The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the dermatologist's individual evaluation and on each patient's clinical concern. The reduction in hair loss and improvement in density are gradual, since the hair cycle takes months, and the response varies from person to person.
Contraindications
Hair MMP is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, over wounds, infections or active inflammation of the scalp, or for people allergic to the medications used. Bleeding disorders and some scalp diseases require evaluation.
At the evaluation, the dermatologist reviews your health history, current medications and previous procedures to confirm the indication.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does hair MMP replace treatment with medication?
No. MMP complements the medical treatment of hair loss and baldness, which usually includes oral or topical medications. The combination is defined at the appointment, according to the cause of the hair loss.
Which medications are used?
The medications and active ingredients are chosen by the doctor according to the cause of hair loss, such as substances that stimulate hair growth, hormone blockers and vitamins. The formula is explained at the evaluation.
Does it hurt?
The sensation is of pricks and mild stinging, which vary with the sensitivity of the scalp. A numbing cream can be used for greater comfort.
Can I wash my hair afterwards?
It is usually recommended to wait a few hours, or until the next day, to wash your hair, as advised by the doctor.
What is the combination of MMP with hair mesotherapy?
It is doing both techniques in the same session: MMP spreads the active ingredients evenly across the thinning areas, and mesotherapy applies micro-injections at specific points.
