Tattoo removal: what is possible with laser
Tattoo removal is done with a Q-switched laser, which breaks up the ink into small particles that the body gradually eliminates. Lightening is progressive, over several sessions, and the result depends on the color, depth and amount of ink, the skin type and the age of the tattoo. Black and dark blue tattoos respond best. At Yamagata Dermatologia, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, the evaluation is done by a dermatologist at the appointment.

Why it happens
Tattoo ink is deposited in the dermis as particles too large for the body to eliminate, which is why it lasts a lifetime. The Q-switched laser emits extremely short pulses of energy that break these particles into smaller fragments, which are gradually removed by the body's defense cells.
How the evaluation is done
The dermatologist assesses the colors, depth and size of the tattoo, the skin type and the patient's goal (complete removal or lightening for a cover-up), and estimates what is possible in each case.
Recommended treatments
- Tattoo removalProgressive lightening and removal of the tattoo.
- Acroma® laserThe Q-switched laser used for removal, also indicated for dark spots.
Combined treatments
In general, removal is done with the laser alone. When dark spots or texture changes remain after treatment, other procedures may be recommended.
All procedures are recommended and performed after an individual medical evaluation. Results vary from person to person.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does every tattoo come off completely?
No. Many tattoos can be completely removed, but some colors, such as green, yellow and light blue, are harder, and some tattoos are only lightened.
Are old tattoos easier to remove?
Usually, yes. Over time, part of the ink has already been eliminated by the body, and amateur tattoos usually have less ink than professional ones.
Can I get a new tattoo over it?
Yes. Partial lightening makes it easier to cover with a new design, in fewer sessions than complete removal.
Can eyebrow micropigmentation be removed?
It can, after careful evaluation. Some skin-tone micropigmentation inks can darken with the laser, which requires a test on a small area.
